The elections to the Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur and Malegaon municipal corporations will be held on May 24, said the state election commission (SEC) on Wednesday.
The Bhiwandi-Nizampur civic body is ruled by a Congress and Shiv Sena alliance, while the Malegaon corporation is under the control of a Congress-Teesara Mahaj alliance. It will be the Panvel Municipal Corporation’s first polls after it came into existence in October last year.
Of the 18 municipal corporations which completed its five-year term this year, the elections to 10 bodies were held in February, while three went to polls on Wednesday. A total of 12.96 lakh eligible voters may cast their votes across three municipal corporations, which have a total of 252 seats. The results of the elections will be declared on May 26.
State election commissioner JS Saharia said the usage of VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail), will not be possible in the elections to the three corporations.
He said the commission has written to the state government for a budgetary allocation of Rs1.86 crore to buy 700 VVPAT machines. They would be introduced in the civic polls at Mira-Bhayandar in August or Nanded by the end of this year.
