The 29-year-old woman from Worli, who was arrested for buying a newborn for Rs20,000 with an intention to sell the child to an NRI couple, may have been running a racket for the past six months.
The Wadala TT police have arrested only Julia Fernandes, so far, and are looking for accomplices.
She was caught on Friday based on a tip-off that she had bought a seven-day-old boy for Rs 20,000 and was going to sell him to a childless couple for Rs1.50 lakh.
On Saturday, the police presented the woman in court where she was remanded in police custody for a day. But the investigating officer told the court the woman has also been involved in selling children to NRI couples, which could turn into a child-trafficking racket. Following this, the court remanded the woman in police custody of seven days.
Fernandes speaks fluent English and has done a course in nursing from the Jawhar University after completing business management, the police said. They are on the lookout for the couples who paid her for the children.
