Illegal structures bulldozed to make way for wider roads in Thane
The Thane Municipal Corporation had issued a statement directing owners of all illegal structures along service roads, Ghodbunder Road, Ghodbunder service road and Pokharan Road No. 1 and 2 to vacate the space before end of this month or they would be demolished without any warning from November 30.
After the Bombay high court (HC) directed the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to clear the roads near Thane railway station of hawkers and unauthorised constructions, TMC officials swung into action on Wednesday morning.
The TMC has formed 10 teams, which began the task of razing illegal bars, garages, second-hand car showrooms and car service centres, along the service roads.
The municipal corporation had issued a statement directing owners of all illegal structures along service roads, Ghodbunder Road, Ghodbunder service road and Pokharan Road No. 1 and 2 to vacate the space before end of this month or they would be demolished without any warning from November 30.
Sandeep Malvi, public relations officer of the TMC, said, “We undertook a major demolition drive against these establishments. We have first targetted the bars. At Manpada, we demolished Knights, Sunday and Metro bars on Wednesday morning. The demolition drive is undertaken along Anandnagar to Nitin Company, Nitin Company to Kapurbawdi, Kapurbawdi to Waghbil Naka and Waghbil Naka to Gaimukh.”
In instances where the bar is on the ground floor of a residential building, the entire structure has been pulled down. The residents will be rehabilitated in the rental homes, said officials.
“In this drive, we will also target tyre shops, spare parts shops, offices, medical stores, furniture shops, sweet shops, electrical shops, hardware stores and ATMs constructed along these roads,” said Malvi.
