Senior citizen run over by speeding trailer on Mumbai-Goa highway

The victim suffered severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body. He died at a local hospital

A 60-year-old man from Panvel was run over by a trailer on the Mumbai-Goa highway on Thursday night. Police said Ramchandra Naik, a resident of Kon village, was crossing the highway around 10 pm when a speeding trailer approaching from Goa crushed him.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle. This is not a case of drink driving,” said a police officer.Naik suffered severe injuries on his head and other parts of his body. Locals took him to a nearby hospital, where he died.

“Trailer driver Amit Kumar Goswami, 36, did not flee after the accident. We arrested him from the spot,” said a police officer from the Panvel taluka police station.

Police booked Goswami under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304a (causing death by negligence), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. He was produced before a judicial court on Friday morning.

Naik’s body was sent to Panvel rural hospital, where a post-mortem was conducted. The body was then delivered to his family. Police said the post-mortem report is awaited.
