Even though the light emitting diode (LED) systems installed in Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) buses for indicating the destination, are facing problems, BEST now wants to have LED-based public information system (PIS) on bus stops across Mumbai.

These systems will be similar to an indicator at railway stations, which shows the place of destination and expected time of arrival.

“We will have a meeting with the private contractor in-charge of installing these LED systems. We have received complaints about the condition of these screens,” said BEST general manager, O.P. Gupta.

BEST wants to replace the old system of bus numbers written on bus stops while the board adjoining the bus stop mentions the stops where the bus will halt.

The new digital LED screens at bus stops is expected to display the bus numbers, its destination and the time of arrival of each bus.

“We will first implement it on a pilot basis. I want to take this system further to a level where people will get these details on their mobile phones,” added Gupta.

The plan is still in the nascent stage, but BEST is confident of making headway within a year.
