Union home minister, Sushilkumar Shinde, underwent surgery at Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday morning. Shinde was operated on for a lung ailment, hospital sources said.
Shinde was admitted to the deluxe wing of the hospital and is under the care of onco-surgeon Dr Raman Deshpande and senior oncologist Dr A Jog. When contacted, Dr Deshpande refused to comment on Shinde’s health.
However, sources at the hospital said that Shinde had been shifted from the operation theatre to the surgical intensive care unit. Shinde is expected to remain hospitalised for more than a week.
A day before the surgery, Shinde attended chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s iftar party. On Saturday, he also attended a function by the National Sports Club of India.
Praniti, Shinde’s daughter and Congress legislator, told Hindustan Times that her father was doing well after the surgery. “It was a minor operation that had been planned well in advance. There is no cause for concern,” she said.
