An injured two-and-a-half foot female Olive Ridley turtle washed ashore at Juhu Koliwada beach on Monday. It was rescued by an animal lover and handed over to members of Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW).
When Ritika Sheth, who runs an animal grooming parlour in Juhu, found the turtle, she was having difficulty breathing. “When I found her around 3.30pm, one of her flippers was cut off, while the other one had a deep cut. She also had an injury on her shell,” said Sheth.
RAWW members said the turtle could not be treated immediately as there is no rehabilitation centre in the city.
“After searching for a rescue centre for nearly six hours, we decided to get her treated by a veterinary doctor of the forest department in Thane. As both her flippers are severely damaged, there are chances that she might not survive,” said Pawan Sharma, president, RAWW. Forest department officials said the turtle will be taken to a rehabilitation centre in Dahanu on Tuesday.
