Finding an 8-year-old boy alone at home, an unidentified man walked in to an apartment in Nalasopara (East) and robbed valuables worth Rs 80,000 on Monday evening.
Officials from the Tulij police station said the boy was alone as his mother had gone to the doctor.
In the afternoon, the accused, suspected to be in his forties, walked into Lucky Manzil building and knocked on the door of the second floor apartment.
When the boy opened the door, the man told him he was from Mother Mary School and asked if the boy’s mother was at home. He said wanted to show her some papers. When the boy told him his mother had gone to the doctor, the accused barged in.
Officials said the boy got scared and started screaming, but the accused locked the door and covered the boy’s mouth. He then started looking for cash and valuables in the cupboard.
“The accused took Rs 10,000 in cash and gold valuables collectively worth more than Rs 80,000. We have registered a case of robbery and house break-in against the unidentified man,” said P Desai, sub-inspector, Tulij police station.
Officials said the CCTV footage they got from the building shows the accused entering and leaving the building within five to seven minutes. The police are working on the footage to identify the man.
Officials said they are also investigating if the accused was known to the family or whether he had done a recce of the area first. The police said this is the first such case in the area.
