According to the police, this would help them file cases against vagabonds, who use these spots for criminal and illegal activities.

If a signboard warning of prosecution is put up, the police can easily book those flouting the norm.

Satyapal Singh, commissioner of police (Mumbai), said they would be issuing the necessary instructions to the owners soon.

Singh said that the ownership of Shakti Mill compound is being disputed, and hence there are issues pertaining to its security.

According to police sources, there are many isolated places such as closed mills, abandoned buildings, railway properties and other government properties that have become hubs for criminal activities and drug addicts.

People passing through such secluded areas often fall prey to various crimes such as thefts, chain snatching, rapes and robberies, as criminals take advantage of the spot being abandoned and unguarded.
