Rege Rizzak, 18, requires a surgical implant to repair his fractured hip joint, which would cost him Rs8,900.
The surgery has been delayed for almost a month due to financial constraints and the unavailability of a relative’s consent for surgery.
JJ Hospital wrote to the police to bear the expenses. “The police does not bear the surgery expenses of an accused,” said Bharat Bhoite, police inspector, Yellow Gate police station.
When the police refused, Ethiopian and Somali translators, who are pursuing management and IT courses in Hyderabad, collected money from students of Manipal University and Osmania University to pay for the expenses. “Expenses of medico-legal cases are borne by the hospital. I am not aware if the accused’s translators raised money for the surgery. I will look into the matter,” said JJ Hospital’s acting dean, Dr Ashok Rathod.
