Farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra have been protesting over a variety of concerns since June 01, 2017 with no relief despite the 2016 harvest figures showing a year-on-year increase according to the Ministry of Agriculture. These protests stem from demands for an increased minimum support price not being met and are compounded by louder calls for loan waivers as promised by the BJP government to farmer in the state of Uttar Pradesh in April. Farmers stage a protest in the run-up to the 2017 Punjab assembly elections in Bhatinda. The farmers’ unions have been raising the issue of suicides and compensation to farmers for cotton crop loss.
