Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace on Sunday, a week after his leftist opponent, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was inaugurated. Thousands of protesters ramped security barriers, scaled roofs, smashed windows, and stormed the three government buildings. Bolsonaro, who flew to Florida ahead of Lula's inauguration, tweeted that peaceful protest is part of democracy, but vandalism and invasions of public buildings are "exceptions to the rule." Among those who condemned the "assault" were US President Joe Biden and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In a tweet, Biden emphasised that the United States fully supports Brazil's democratic institutions. Prime minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern following the riots saying, "Deeply concerned about the news of rioting and vandalism against the State institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone. We extend our full support to the Brazilian authorities."
