PHOTOS:Spectacular textures on Mars hold clues to life

In a scientific paper published recently, Elon Musk has outlined detailed plans to try and establish a Martian Colony. Since arriving into the Mars orbit more than a decade ago, the Mars Orbital Reconnaissance mission has sent back more than 250,000 images revealing Mars in ways never seen before. Shown above are surreal sand dunes in Noctis Labyrinthyus, an extensively fractured region on the western end of Valles Marineris on the red planet.

Windblown Sand in Ganges Chasma: Dark, windblown sand covers intricate sedimentary rock layers in this image captured by NASA’s (MRO) from Ganges Chasma, a canyon in the Valles Marineris system. In a paper published recently in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, scientists in the ARES Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston report that early Mars may have been quite similar to early Earth, and so these environments might have been habitable.

Equatorial Gullies in Krupac Crater: Although large gullies (ravines) are concentrated at higher latitudes, there are gullies on steep slopes in equatorial regions on Mars. NASA has recently found evidence that the red planet could have been teeming with life following studies on the latest samples taken by the Curiosity rover which landed near Mount Sharp in Gale Crater in August 2012 and reached the base of the mountain in 2014.
