The Pune police have arrested a notorious criminal who had escaped from custody while returning to jail after a court hearing.

Booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Lubya and the two others managed to flee while returning from a court hearing in Khandala in a case involving the kidnapping of a local businessman. “At the time they ran away into the jungle area of the ghats,” Rashmi Shukla, commissioner of Pune Police said.

Kalya alias Raju Mahadev Patre, 32, from Ambegaon, Santosh Macchindra Jagtap, from Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Lubhya alias Santosh Chintamani Chandilkar, 36, were serving jail time for various crimes including murder, attempted murder and robbery, when they escaped, according to a statement issued by Basavraj Teli, deputy commissioner of police, Zone-1 on September 15.

Lubya was arrested for kidnapping Suhas Pannalal Bafna, 51, a local businessman who owns a factory in Moshi, on September 5, according to Pankaj Dahane, deputy commissioner of police, crime.

Three other men, along with Lubya, had asked for ₹50 lakh ransom in order to release Bafna. The police claim that the men let Bafna go on September 8 after they realised that the police were on their tail. A case under Section 364(a) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the four kidnappers, including Kalu Patre and Lubya Chandilkar, at Kothrud police station.

“Besides this case,Lubya Chandilkar managed to commit seven other crimes in Pune and Satara in the weeks after he fled from jail,” commissioner Shukla said. “We worked closely with the Sangli police as they knew the regional topography better. Our policemen were in Sangli with them while making the arrest,” she said.

Lubya already has over 35 cases against him including five murders, three attempted murders, 20 cases of robbery, five of kidnapping and one for preparing to commit dacoity, among others, according to the police. Two policemen - Subhash Khade and Vijay Waghmare - were suspended, and then arrested by the police, for being party to the escape plan, commissioner Shukla said.

Advocate Satish Mancharkar was arrested on September 15 for helping the three men escape in order to kill former Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) corporator Kailash Kadam. While the police have managed to nab two men involved in the kidnapping case of Bafna, they are on a lookout for two others.

Earlier in September, the police also arrested Kalya Patre, from Chinchwad.
