A statement recorded at the Khadki police station in May this year, clearly indicates that city Congressman Rohit Tilak, who has been booked for rape by the Pune police, had a strained relationship with the 41-year-old complainant in the rape case.
On May 3, the Khadki police had registered a statement by the woman in which she had recorded an assault by Rohit Tilak, the great grandson of freedom fighter, Lokmanya Tilak.
Khadki police confirmed that on the morning of May 3, the 41-year-old woman had arrived at the Mariyaee Gate police chowky and submitted a written statement alleging that she had been assaulted by Rohit Tilak. The statement was submitted to the Pune police as a part of the evidence against Rohit Tilak in the current case. Tilak arrived at the chowky and convinced the complainant not to press charges, the police said.
The alleged incident happened at Tilak’s office in Khadki. The police record shows that the woman did not wish to press charges after interacting with Tilak. The incident was recorded as an assault due to “business related conflict” between the two. The woman, Tilak and two others have signed the police record book, where the incident has been recorded.
The complainant also has a copy of a Medico Legal Case (MLC) at the Out Patient Department (OPD) at Sassoon Hospital relating to the assault incident at Khadki. The MLC lists contusion over right forearm, and blunt trauma to right cheek and shoulder, and blunt trauma to left wrist as a result of an assault on the woman around 2 pm on May 3. The case, however, was not registered.
When contacted, Rohit Tilak’s advocate, Nandu Phadke, said he wasn’t the legal counsel then. He, however, claimed that the police asked her for call records in May which deterred her from pursuing the case further.
Police sub inspector Kamble told HT that the matter was settled internally by the two and therefore, the police did not pursue the case further.
Last week, the 38-year-old Tilak was booked by Pune police after charges were pressed by the same woman, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 376 and 377, meant for punishment for rape and carnal intercourse against the order of nature.
According to the woman, she was in a relationship with Tilak since March, 2015 when they had met at a social gathering and later connected on a social networking site. The woman in her First Information Report (FIR), alleged verbal abuse committed by the former Maharashtra Youth Congress president and his associates. She alleged that she was threatened with murder and Tilak instigated her to commit suicide.
According to the police, the 41-year-old complainant claimed that Tilak had promised to marry her before forcing her to have sex with him on multiple occasions and places. She also alleged that Tilak asked for and took ₹10 lakh from her during the course of their relationship.
BOX: Woman seeks police protection
The complainant in the rape case against Rohit Tilak filed an application with the Pune police on July 24 asking for police protection after being threatened and asked to drop the charges against the accused.
The 41-year-old complainant said in her submission that two bike-borne men with a bottle full of some liquid appeared outside her car around 11 am while she was travelling and asked her to withdraw the complaint or face an acid attack.
While the investigating officer in the case, assistant police inspector (API) Varsha Shinde of Faraskhana police station said she did not receive the application, the complainant said that she sent an application to Basavraj Teli, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 1 and additional commissioner of police, south region and Vishrambaug police station.
