Worms wriggling about in the glass of water served to ward number 10 corporators, Keshav Gholve and Tushar Hinge of BJP, by the peon on Monday turned out to be an ‘eye-opener’ for the two public representatives of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

Gholve and Hinge said that the drinking water was given to them from the water cooler placed on the third floor of the corporation office. Gholve said, “I told the peon to open the lid of the water cooling machine and found many worms in the container. The same water was supplied to the building through taps.’’

A representative of BVG Group, the housekeeping firm responsible to main cleanliness on the premises, told Gholve that the firm’s contract was limited to external cleaning only.

"If we had not forced open the water cooling machine, many people would have ignorantly continued to drink the contaminated water,” Hinge said.

PCMC assistant health officer MN Shinde assured that corrective measures will be taken to ensure clean drinking water supply at the PCMC building. Later, the two corporators rushed to the municipal commissioner’s office to inform him about the contaminated water. PCMC commissioner Shravan Hardikar inspected the water cooler and directed the health department to install water purifier within two days.

Gholve demanded that the health department should fix the responsibility of cleaniness of PCMC building and conduct regular audit before clearing tender for maintenance contract for cleaning.
