UT additional district and sessions judge SS Sahni on Thursday awarded life term to a resident of Sector 46 for having murdered thenaternal uncle of his wife after a drunken argument in December 2011.
The convict, Ramesh Jaiswal, 32, who worked as an electrician, had stabbed Dilbag Rai, 58, of Bathinda, when the latter tried to intervene in a fight between Ramesh and a man named Balbir Singh, the alleged paramour of Ramesh's wife Ravinder Kaur. The statement of Balbir, who is Ramesh's distant relative, led to the conviction.
As per the prosecution, on the night of December 3, 2011, Ramesh attacked Balbir, who had been staying with him at his house in Sector 46, after he caught him consuming liquor with his wife and the wife's uncle. In fact, at the time of the assault, all of them were under the influence of liquor.
Initially, Ramesh stabbed Balbir. Dilbag tried to intervene, but he was also stabbed. Both were taken to the hospital where Dilbagh was declared brought dead.
Ravinder Kaur first helped her husband Ramesh mislead the police by stating that Balbir and
Dilbag had been attacked in a park near their house in Sector 46. The theory fell flat after Balbir's statement.
Ramesh is Ravinder's second husband. Her first husband had died in 2009. Ramesh and Ravinder were living in a public works department (PWD) service quarters, which had been allotted to Ravinder's first husband.
