Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered the state jails department to construct a new central jail in 44 acres panchayat land available to it and has ruled out the acquisition of another 25 acres.
The project had been delayed as the state government had failed to issue a notification to acquire 25 acres at Khai Pheme Ki village, even as the project had been approved on 44 acres of panchayat land on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road.
Sources said that to avoid alienating the farmers by acquiring their land for the village, a proposal has now been made to amend the design of the new jail and construct it in two floors.
The proposal to vacate the present jail site is being seen as a major resource generator for the government, as the prime property on Mall Road will fetch a handsome amount in auction.
This may finance the construction of the modern jail and also generate additional revenue.
The Punjab Infrastructure and Development Board has already taken 22 acres of the 62 acres of the present jail.
Badal had given consent to construct the new jail as the current building is dilapidated besides being packed to capacity.
DGP (jails) Anil Kaushik and other senior officials had visited two sites -- Khai Pheme Ki village on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road and the Malwal village on the Ferozepur-Moga road -- to construct the new jail and reportedly approved the site at Khai Pheme Ki village.
The three panchayats of the Village Khai Pheme Ki had unanimously agreed to give the land and the state government would compensate the same accordingly, revealed an official.
Deputy commissioner Manjit Singh Narang said that the resolutions passed by newly-established panchayats to give land had been forwarded to the state government.
