Chief of Army Staff to visit Punjabi University today

Security forces are on high alert as Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) General Bikram Singh visit Punjabi University here on Friday to deliver the inaugural address in a national seminar on the topic 'Non-traditional threats to India's security: Challenges and responses'.

The chief's special helicopter is scheduled to arrive at the army grounds in the cantonment area, from where he would move to the varsity on road to address the conference scheduled to start at 11am.

The army took full control of the campus security apparatus a day before the visit, the first by an army chief to Punjabi University since it was established in 1962.

Head of the defence and strategic studies department Dr Kamal Kinger, who is also the seminar coordinator, said Arvind Gupta, director general of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi, would deliver the keynote address. Vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh would preside over the function.

During the two-day seminar, prominent scholars from various universities of India, senior army officers and bureaucrats would present papers and deliberate on different dimensions of the theme.

For Gen Bikram Singh, this will be his second visit to Patiala district after he became chief of the Indian Army. In October last year, he had visited his alma mater Punjab Public School in Nabha.

Meanwhile, exhibition of army tanks, artillery guns, communication systems, radars and a number of other latest gadgets was opened at the cricket ground of the university by the V-C. Brig PK Saini of the 43rd Armed Brigade was present on the occasion.

Information regarding recruitment to the armed forces has also been displayed.
