A girl’s abduction drama was exposed by the clues gathered from social-networking website Facebook.

On August 23, on her way back from college, the engineering student called up her father to say that some men were after her; and then she went missing, and the family presumed that she had been abducted. Police had doubts about the story, as there was no witness to the crime on the busy street where it was supposed to have occurred.

“When tracking the girl’s contacts yielded no clue, police studied her mobile-phone call details and the last facebook conversation with some boys and girls,” senior superintendent of police Surinder Kalia said here on Tuesday. The lead came from a boy from her class, who said she might be with another girl in Amritsar who was her Facebook friend.

At Amritsar, police found not only her but also another Pathankot girl who had left home in anger. Officers brought both back to Panthankot and called their parents. The second girl had run away because her family doubted her character, while the engineering student from Indira Colony indicated that she was harassed by circumstances.

Police would present both before the judicial magistrate and, later, hand them over to their families.
