Junior World Boxing Champion Mandeep Kaur Sandhu gets rousing welcome
After winning the coveted title of Junior World Boxing Championship held at Taipei (Taiwan), golden girl Mandeep Kaur Sandhu received a warm welcome in Ludhiana on Tuesday.

Ludhiana deputy commissioner (DC) Rajat Agarwal and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Jagraon, SR Kaler honoured the 16-year-old world champion in 52 kg category at the mini secretariat on Tuesday.
Mandeep Kaur Sandhu along with her parents Jagdev Singh and Daljit Kaur, coach Surinder Kaur, brother Jagwinder Singh and Chakar village residents were greeted at the mini secretariat amidst cheers and clappings by fans, parents, coaches and sports lovers. She was on her way back to Chakar village after winning the title.
Punjab education minister Daljeet Singh Cheema had announced Rs 1 lakh for Mandeep in Chandigarh on Monday.
DC Rajat Agarwal lauding her achievement, said the state government has approved the recruitment of 125 sportspersons in police department to promote sports. He said that the sportspersons would be recruited for the posts of DSP, sub-inspector and constable as per their achievements in the national and international sports events.
Jagraon MLA SR Kaler said, “Elated over her achievement, the Punjab government has also announced to sanction two wings (U-14 girls and U-17 boys) of boxing for the government school of Chakar village.” He informed that each wing would accommodate 13 boxers.
Canada-based NRI Baldev Singh Sidhu, patron of Sher-e-Punjab Sports Academy, Chakar village, said he would continue to support raw sporting talent in the rural areas of the state and would help them hone their skills to become world champions. According to him, he is proud of Mandeep Kaur Sandhu, who has been associated with the Sher-e-Punjab Sports Academy.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Jagraon SDM Rakesh Kumar Popli, DEO (secondary) Paramjit Kaur Chahal, district sports officer Balwant Singh Sandhu and others.
Later Mandeep Kaur Sandhu was also honoured at Government Senior Secondary School, Jagraon. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur International Foundation and Malwa Sabhyacharak Manch Punjab also honoured Mandeep Kaur in a function organised at Rajguru Nagar. She was conferred with Pride of Punjab award.
Foundation's president Krishan Kumar Bawa and others said that such achievements from the villages show that our youth is very much talented and could bring laurels for the nation, if shown a right direction.
An honour programme was also organised for Mandeep at Sher-E-Punjab Sports Academy in Chakar village.
