A woman was reported dead under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws house in Bargari village on Friday late evening.
The family of the victim, Jyoti Kaur from Jagadhri, has alleged that she was being harassed for dowry since her marriage with Suraj Singh. 18 months ago.
"My sister had been married on February 26 2012 to Suraj Singh, a resident of village Bargari. Soon after marriage, she was tortured for dowry and she was sent to us at Jagadhri for bringin insufficient dowry. We were also being pressed by her in-laws for giving them Rs 2 lakh more," alleged Jaspreet Singh, the brother of the victim.
"She had returned to her in-laws only around a month ago on the assurance of the maternal uncle (Mama) of the husband that she would not be harassed any more. However, on Friday their neighbours informed us that she was dead," he alleged.
He added that they did not know how she had died, but alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws.
The Bajakhana police have registered a case under Section 304 B (dowry death during the first seven years of marriage) against the four accused, including husband Suraj Singh, his parents Jasvir singh and Amarjeet Kaur, and younger brother Gurdit singh.
Bargari police post incharge ASI Roop Chand did not confirm whether the accused had been arrested or not.
"The in-laws wanted to settle the case before the police were involved. However, the victim's family remained adamant on the registration of a case," said a neighbour, on the condition of anonymity.
