In yet another case of negligence, a man accused of burglary managed to escape custody late on Thursday.

The incident occurred after the man, who was taken to Jamalpur police station, pushed off a cop and fled the spot.

Head constable Gurmukh Singh, who is a munshi at the police station, was suspended. Residents of Mundian had nabbed the man after catching him red-handed stealing valuables from houses.

After thrashing him, the residents handed him over to police. Other cops left the police station after they put the accused under Gurmukh Singh’s watch.

Sources said the accused asked the head constable to use the washroom. As the head constable took him to the washroom, he pushed the cop and fled. The cop’s turban was tossed in air during the incident. Gurmukh raised an alarm and called fellow cops. Police tried to chase the accused, who disappeared in the streets of Sector 32 on Chandigarh Road, but were unable to trace him.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (City 4) Sandeep Sharma said, “Efforts are on to arrest the accused. The head constable was suspended for his negligence.”

This is the second such incident in this month.

Accused of illegal mining, a man fled police custody on April 1, when two cops were bringing him to the police station after producing him before the court. However, the accused was caught later.
