Minor found pregnant, 40-year-old arrested for rape in Jalandhar

The victim’s father, a daily wager, went to the police after he came to know about his daughter’s pregnancy.

A 14-year-old deaf and dumb girl who was sexually assaulted by a labour contractor, when the victim’s parents had gone for work, was found five-month pregnant in Kang Sabu village of the district.Out of fear of the accused the girl could not reveal about the incident to the parents. The accused was living in an adjoining house.

The victim’s father, a daily wager went to the police after he came to know on Wednesday late night about his daughter’s pregnancy. The father took the girl to a nearby doctor after the victim’s sister who had come to meet her parents noticed her bulged abdomen. During her examination it was confirmed that she was over five-months pregnant.After knowing about the development, the daily wager filed a complaint with the Nakodar police station. The local police with the help of experts and family got to know about the accused contractor Shiv ,40, who was living in the neighbouring house.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Nakodar Dr Mukesh Kumar informed, “The accused has been arrested based on the girl’s statement and will be produced in the court on Friday.” DSP said that a case has been registered under Sections 376 (rape) of the IPC and 3, 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. DSP claimed that it was the victim’s elder sister who had forced the parents to take the victim to the hospital as the parents had hardly noticed the pregnancy. Victim’s father and mother who are both daily wagers belong to Bihar.

The medical examination of the victim will be held on Friday. Previously also in the first week of April, a similar incident had come to fore when a girl near Maqsudan was found 22-weeks pregnant. Based on the victim’s statement, a case was registered against Deepak Singh, Jiwan Singh and Sajan Singh, all residents of Bholath, under Sections 376-D (gang rape), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the IPC and Sections 4, 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012 at Maqsudan police station.
