The Amritsar Municipal Corporation will hold its first meeting on Tuesday ever since the new house was formed in September last year. The fund-starved MC is likely to give nod to the property tax, water meter policy and also hike in fee of various services such as issuance of birth and death certificates, in the meeting.
As per the meeting agenda that was circulated to all the 65 councillors, the House will clear Rs 10-crore budget for buying machinery for cleanliness in the city. Other than this, development works in various wards of the city will also be given approval.
However, the House is unlikely to give nod to any major project, as there is paucity of funds that is giving tough time to the municipal corporation. The corporation is yet to receive funds from the state government despite having sent numerous reminders to its request for Rs 100-crore aid.
Municipal corporation commissioner Bhupinder Singh said, "There are few important things on the agenda. Apart from the property tax and the water meter policy, we will also seek approval for the advertisement policy." Other than this a budget will be allocated for buying machinery and development works in various wards of the city, he added. On a question, the commissioner said that there was no major project that would be presented before the House.
Expressing concern, Congress councillor Gurinder Rishi, said, "The meeting of the House is taking place after a long wait but still it does not have much to offer to the people other than taxes." Property tax, water meter policy will just add to the woes of the public, said the Congress councillor, who has announced to forego his salary for five years. Rishi also pointed out that the civic body had not plans to tackle issues like waterlogging, depleted roads, garbage dumps etc.
