The deadlock between students and the administration at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) over suspension of three students from Agricultural Engineering College is set to witness a face-off on Monday.
The administration has called an urgent meeting of parents of all university students to convince them not to participate in the strike, which entered its 10th day on Saturday.
On the other hand, PAU Students Association (PAUSA), which is leading the strike, has declared to organise a mega show of strength by bringing a large number of students to the venue, where the chain hunger strike is underway.
Though for Saturday, the routine functioning remained off because of the holiday, but the non-teaching administrative staff of several departments in PAU remained busy in calling parents to ensure that the meeting proves a success in order to derail students' agitation.
Sources said that the move was a bid to weaken students' movement and is the brainchild of vice-chancellor BS Dhillon, who as per a senior officer will address parents to ask their wards to attend classes.
"The demand of students to completely abolish the punishment of students, who were found in an inebriated condition on the campus, cannot be fulfilled at all. The administration cannot tolerate such acts of indiscipline," a communiqué sent from the communication centre of the university read.
However, PAUSA leaders said that they were ready for the challenge and will stage the parallel show of stength. The students too have decided to invite parents to support them in the dharna.
PAUSA president Sharanveer Singh said: "We are also making simultaneous calls to parents to attend our dharna after getting free from speeches by the vice-chancellor. A march against the vice-chancellor will also be staged after the dharna."
Meanwhile, PAUSA has also appealed to all students to attend the dharna on Monday morning. A team of girl students have been given the task to mobilise as many girls from the hostels as possible.
