After a pleasant Saturday morning, the tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali was caught in a maze of haze on Saturday afternoon.
Terming the freak weather the fallout of a western disturbance, Surender Paul, the director of the Indian Meteorological Department’s Chandigarh centre, said: “There will be light rain across the region on Saturday and Sunday.”
Watch: Duststorm catches Chandigarh unaware
“A thunderstorm is also likely with the wind speed reaching 35 kmph,” he said.
The haze gave way to a dust storm in the afternoon, catching commuters by surprise. Many, particularly two-wheeler drivers, were left high and dry with visibility dropping.
The mercury also dropped by 3-5 degrees from Friday’s high of 39 degrees Celsius to 36 degrees on Saturday.
