The industrial training institute (ITI) here is planning to introduce new courses for girl students in order to tap the growing market for skilled workers.

This was announced by chief parliamentary secretary Parkash Chand Garg, who visited the ITI on Monday. "Besides the usual professional courses such as tailoring, stitching and knitting, girl students will now be provided vocational courses in fashion designing, computer application, hair and skin care etc for which there was a good market," he said.

The ITI which is one of the oldest in the state is being expanded at a cost of Rs 1 crore. Once completed, it will have five additional workshops besides theory rooms and other provisions making it possible to admit at least 84 more girl students in addition to the existing strength of 136.

Garg also discussed the progress of the construction activities of the new wing. He said it was a policy decision of the state government to lay more stress on skill development and vocational courses alongside general education to enable youth to get self-employed and become economically independent.

Referring to special provision for the scheduled caste girls, Garg said they were eligible for an annual scholarship of Rs 2,760.
