Two arrested for Hoshiarpur sarpanch’s murder in Sector 38

Satnam Singh, a resident of Khurdan village of Hoshiarpur was killed, owing to an old rivalry, outside gurdwara in sector 38, Chandigarh on April 9 after eight bullets were fired at him by three persons who later fled in a Hyundai i20 car.

Those arrested are identified as Arshdeep and Tirath. The two were named as accused by Satnam Singh himself before he died in the hospital.

Having faced a lot of flank for inaction, police on Thursday arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the murder of sarpanch Satnam Singh alias Bittu (38). Those arrested have been identified as Arshdeep and Tirath, of Khurdan village of Hoshiarpur.

Satnam had named them as accused before he died in the hospital. Three people had fired eight bullets at Satnam, of Khurdan village of Hoshiarpur, outside the Sector 38 gurdwara in Chandigarh on April 9.

The case had been widely publicized after videos of the gun-totting accused were widely shared in the media.

The accused, later, fled in an Hyundai i-20.

“We have arrested Arshdeep and Tirath,” said SSP Eish Singhal.

Police had attributed rivalry as motive. Seven people were named for the murder, including three criminals.

Satnam was witness

in a murder case

Police said that Satnam Singh was an witness in the murder case of his brother Nishan Singh alias Shana of Khurdan village who was shot dead in July 2013 by rivals in Garhdiwala town.

Police sources also said that Satnam was to give testimony before court on April 30. Police thus suspect that the firing took place in order to ensure Satnam did not make it to court.

Enmity dates back to 1993

“Charanjeet Singh Charni, a transporter had hired the accused to kill Satnam,” alleged Prince, brother of deceased Satnam Singh.

“Enmity between the families goes back to 1993 when they got our father Sampooran Singh killed. His murder case was rendered untraced by the police,” said Price.

Arshdeep and Tirath had joined the investigation previously. Tirath had provided video clips showing his presence in the village market. While Arshdeep, too, had claimed to be in Hoshiarpur, at time of the murder as per his mobile tower location.

Three contract

killers were hired

The two accused, along with Bobby, the grandson of Gurcharan Singh of the same village, were accused of hiring three wanted criminals---- Dilpreet, Harwinder Singh alias Rinda and Harwinder alias Akash, to kill Satnam.

“We arrested them for their involvement in the conspiracy of murder of Satnam Singh. We have procured their four day police remand,” said the SSP.
