Owing to lack of safety equipments, two workers of municipal council died of suffocation while cleaning a sewer line near bus stand at Patti, 20km from Taran Taran, on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Aman Kumar, 35, and Prem Kumar, 29, both residents of Patti.

At around 9am, they entered the sewer line but within a few minutes, their condition started worsening.

When noticed, nearby people rescued them with the help of a rope, but the workers had fallen unconscious.

They were rushed to a private hospital where they were declared dead by doctors, said Major Singh, sewerage incharge.

Sanitary inspector Ranbir Sood and labourer union president Balwant Roy were also present at the hospital.

Both the workers were married and had children. They had been working as sewage cleaners through a contractor for 10 years but had not regularised.

Their family members sought adequate compensation from Punjab government.
