High drama was witnessed at a government school in Abohar on Tuesday as angry villagers vandalised the car of the principal who was accused of harassing a class-12 girl student.
Abohar sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Jaspreet Singh and superintendent of police Charanjit Singh had to rush to the school to control the mob.
Amardev, sarpanch of Amarpura village, alleged that Sukhdev Singh, principal of a government school, was harassing the girl by making late-night calls on her mobile number for the past many months.
“The girl’s family finally took up the matter with the village panchayat two days ago,” said Dalip Kumar, a panchayat member.
The girl’s family gathered the call details of her mobile and confronted the principal along with other villagers.
However, they alleged that Sukhdev misbehaved with them following which the villagers locked the main gate of the school and demanded action against the principal.
Later, the situation turned ugly when protesters smashed the windows of principal’s car.
The villagers said they have lodged a complaint with the Fazilka district education officer who has marked a probe and transferred the principal.
Taking swift action, state education minister Aruna Chaudary has formed a three member committee to look into the charges against the principal and sought a report within 24 hours. The family has also filed a police complaint. ‘We are probing the matter and will take action accordingly,” said Abohar SP Charanjit Singh.
Principal Sukhdev, on his part, rebuffed the charges.
