After playing a tribal character in Vanamagan, Jayam Ravi will be seen playing a magician cum escape artist in Shakti Soundar Rajan’s Tik Tik Tik, touted to be India’s first space film. Originally planned as a Republic Day release, the filmmakers withdrew in the last minute for unknown reasons. After weeks of speculation, makers announced on Saturday that their film will finally release worldwide on June 22. An official poster with release date to mark the announcement was also shared.

In a media interaction in January in Chennai, Ravi had said nobody believed him when he said he was going to do a space film. “When I told some well-wishers and friends that I was going to do a space film, nobody believed in me or in the project. They looked down upon the idea itself. The bigger challenge for us was to script a movie like this in the first place. It needed a lot of vision and clarity. I could foresee the result when I read the script, but nobody believed in us expect our producer Jhabak. But I was quite confident because audiences and media have always supported whenever I attempted something different. Even though the execution was very strenuous, we were thrilled with the output which was beyond our satisfaction. It’ll be a milestone in my career and in Tamil cinema.”

The film marks the second time collaboration of Shakti and Ravi, who had previously worked in a zombie thriller Miruthan, which also starred Lakshmi Menon. “We could even attempt an ambitious project such as this only because of the faith Ravi and producer Jhabak had in me. Usually, space films are not attempted because it calls for lot of collaborative effort and as a genre it’s considered very problematic. We’ve successfully overcome such challenges and produced a film which will make everyone proud,” Shakti said, and heaped praise on the VFX company Ajax, calling them the hidden heroes of the film.

“When we decided to make the film, the biggest question that people had in mind was about Computer Graphics (CG) and how it’d look in the final output. All the CG work was done by a Chennai-based company. After watching the trailer, a lot people from various parts of the country called to enquire about the CG work and who was behind it.”
