Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s controversial picture is part of a film promotion.

After her brilliant performance as a folk dancer in National Award winning director Bala’s Thaarai Thappattai, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar made headlines for openly talking about casting couch in Tamil filmdom. The actor even started a campaign called ‘Save Shakti’ to fight against sexual harassment against women.

Just when Varalaxmi was being branded as a bold and daring actor fighting for women empowerment, the recent promotional strategy of the makers of her upcoming film Echarikkai has tarnished her image.

On Tuesday, Echarikkai’s PR team had unveiled a picture of Varalaxmi tied on a bed with her mouth gagged on Twitter and wrote #VaralaxmiGotKidnapped. Though the hashtag trended instantly, the actor received a lot of backlash for the cheap promotional strategy.

Netizens called it a cheap attempt to grab the attention of audiences. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Varalaxmi quickly apologized on Twitter. “I’m absolutely fine.. thank u for ur’s a part of our movie promotion.. announcement at 6pm..!!. I wasn’t aware of this promotion as I’m in Delhi representing my Save Shakti petition to the Law ministry..Sorry for the trouble..!! (sic)”.
