The world's largest online video store is reportedly planning a version targeting the under-10 set.
According to The Information, YouTube has been sounding out a number of video producers on the subject of creating or tailoring content for pre-teens with a view to offering a safer, parent-friendly version of YouTube.
Although the publication stresses that the site for children is still in the discussion stage -- i.e., don't expect it to launch any time soon -- the platform would be free of both potentially risqué content and comments and could be governed by an app that would give parents even greater filtering and curation control.
A child-safe version of the site could also do away with much of the current advertising that litters the standard site, but could conceivably also become a platform for targeted age-appropriate marketing activities.
YouTube is by far the world's most popular online destination for video content. Over 60 percent of online Americans visit the site every week and as of March 2013, the last time the site released official figures, it was being visited by 1 billion unique users every month -- that's half of the world's online population.
