In order to accelerate the broadband growth in the country, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday issued a consultation paper to deliberate on issues relating to transition from IPv4 to IPv6.
"The growing number of 'Always On' broadband connection will require a large number of IP addresses which current version of Internet protocol (IPv4) are unable to provide. IPv6 has the capacity to expand the available address space enormously," said the regulator in a press release.
The TRAI's initiative to come up with the consultation paper would provide the necessary platform for discussing other related issues like facilitating role of regulator, need for national IPv6 test bed, establishing national agency for managing IP addresses and IPv6 transition strategy for service providers.
The regulator had solicited comments from all the stakeholders on recommendation in the paper by September 23, 2005.
