Amazon on Wednesday launched its Alexa-powered smart speakers range, including Amazon Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Plus, in India. The three devices are priced at Rs 9,999, Rs 4,499 and Rs 14,999. To purchase the devices, customers need to request an invitation on Amazon’s official listing for the three devices. The company also announced that it will soon be launching its Prime Music service in India.
The company is offering a discount of 30% on the purchase price of Echo devices and along with one year of Prime membership. The Amazon Echo speakers will ship beginning the week of October 30th.
The company claims that the Alexa voice assistant has been customised for the Indian audience, which now supports local pronunciations and intonation. It also supports local music titles, names and places. Amazon brought in Indian developers to optimise Alexa for the local audience. The company claims third-party developers are already working on new and localised skills for the voice assistant.
“10,000 skills will be available for customers in India, including skills from Saavn, Times of India, ESPNcricinfo, Ola, Freshmenu, and more,” the company said in a release.
“Tens of millions of customers are already using Alexa, and today we’re excited to bring her to India with an all-new experience designed from the ground up for our customers in India,” said Dave Limp, senior vice president, Amazon Devices and Services. “The combination of Alexa and Echo provides customers with hands-free access to music, weather, news, information, and more—just ask.”
Priced at Rs 9,999, the Amazon Echo has 360-degree omnidirectional audio and features seven microphones which leverage a propriety beam-forming technology. The device measures 148.5 x 88 x 88 mm and weighs 821 grams. It features 2.5-inch woofer and 0.6-inch tweeter.
The device can also connect to other smart devices, such as lights, switches and other connected devices from brands such as Philips and Syska. Users can also give voice commands to order food from Zomato, request ride from Ola Cabs or book a service on UrbanClap.
The Echo Dot has a smaller form factor but retains the core features of the Amazon Echo speaker. The device measures 83.5 x 83.5 x 32 mm and weighs 163 grams. While it can be connected to external speakers, the device comes with built-in speaker (0.6-inch tweeter) for voice feedback. Priced at Rs 4,499, the device uses the same far-field voice recognition to access Alexa as Echo. The device comes in black and white colour options.
Amazon Echo Plus
The Echo Plus, as the name suggests, has a bigger size. It comes with the same 360-degree omnidirectional audio and seven microphones. It has 2.5-inch woofer and 0.8-inch tweeter. It measures 235 x 84 x 84 mm and weighs 954 grams. Its dual-band Wi-Fi supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 and 5 GHz) and ZigBee certified networks. It does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.
