Apple earlier this week previewed iOS 11.3, the next update to its mobile operating system for iPhones. One of the key features of the upcoming iOS iteration is support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML), technology that sends users’ location to emergency services when the user calls.

“Additional iOS 11.3 features include support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML) to automatically send a user’s current location when making a call to emergency services in countries where AML is supported,” Apple wrote in a blog post earlier this week.

What is AML?

The technology was developed in the UK by British Telecom, EE Limited, and HTC to address the problem of locating caller location in emergencies. When a person makes the distress call to emergency services with an AML-enabled smartphone, the device automatically sends location data to the agencies.

AML uses GPS and Wi-Fi data when someone calls any emergency number and then sends a text with the caller’s precise location to responders.

AML is not currently supported in the US, but iOS device users in the UK, Belgium, New Zealand, Sweden, Lithuania and some parts of Lower Austria can take advantage, according to The Verge.

Notably, all Android smartphones running Gingerbread Operating System (OS) and above support AML.

Other iOS 11.3 features

Besides AML, iOS 11.3 will bring a range of new features, especially the ability to disable the processor throttle, a controversial feature that allegedly slowed down older iPhones with worn out batteries. With the update, iPhones will show battery health and recommend when a battery needs to be serviced.

The upcoming Apple iOS 11.3 update will also offer features such as business messaging service within iMessage, Augmented Reality (AR) upgrade and Animoji.
