Google introduced dark mode on Google Chrome with the latest update, Chrome 74. Dark mode is available for desktop and Android devices but the feature is yet to be integrated.

Google says dark mode will be widely available soon, but till then Android users can enable this feature on their devices through a workaround. Dark mode feature is available through Chrome flags, the experimental site for unreleased features. Google Chrome app should be updated to the latest version for this feature to work.

How to enable dark mode on Google Chrome

Open Google Chrome and type chrome://flags in the search bar.

Once the page opens, type ‘Android Chrome’ in the text bar.

Set the option to ‘enabled’ for Android Chrome UI dark mode.

Once you change this, there will be an option to relaunch Chrome.

After this, go to the settings menu and select dark mode.

Note that you will most likely not see dark mode on the first try. Make sure to kill the app and try enabling the feature few times. Once you select dark mode, you’ll see a dark Chrome background with the text bar and icons highlighted by a grayish accent.

Google confirmed dark mode helps saves battery life on smartphones. The search giant will launch system-wide dark mode with the upcoming Android Q. Apple is also expected to roll out dark mode for iPhones with iOS 13 whic will be announced next month at WWDC 2019. Apps like Twitter, Messenger, and YouTube already offer dark mode on their platforms. WhatsApp is also testing dark mode on its app.
