Google’s human-like Duplex voice AI will now identify itself before conversations

After the outcry, Google decided to add a built-in disclosure to the system with some sort of a verbal announcement to the human on the other end that they are in fact talking to an AI.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai earlier this week shocked everyone with a highly advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) that was capable of making calls on humans’ behalf. The AI platform Google Duplex uses superior voice technology to make the conversations very human-like.

Since the announcement, the tech world has been divided over the technology with many raising concerns over ethics and privacy. Google has now addressed it saying the Duplex AI will introduce itself before the conversation.

“We understand and value the discussion around Google Duplex -- as we’ve said from the beginning, transparency in the technology is important,” CNET quotes a Google spokesperson as saying.

“We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we’ll make sure the system is appropriately identified. What we showed at I/O was an early technology demo, and we look forward to incorporating feedback as we develop this into a product.”

Google Duplex is an experimental AI system and was introduced at the Google I/O 2018 earlier this week. It uses DeepMind’s new WaveNet audio-generation technique and other advances in natural language processing to make it sound more humanlike, The Verge reports.

Google Duplex is expected to be in beta within the Assistant platform this summer.
