The digital evolution of music started from downloading MP3 files, to converting YouTube videos into MP3, and now streaming online. Music streaming apps are the biggest factors in the digital music scene with companies catering to not only fans of English music, but Hindi and regional ones as well.
Here’s a list of the best music streaming apps in India available as free and paid versions.
Saavn is one of the most popular Indian music streaming apps, especially for English songs. You can stream music on Saavn for free as long as you have an internet connection.
If you want to download songs, then you’ll have to subscribe to Saavn Pro which is available at a monthly subscription of Rs 95 per month. If you take package subscriptions then you get discounts up to 45%. You can also download a paid trial version of Saavn which is valid for 7 days.
One of the best features of Saavn is the ability to get the latest releases on new music. It’s a great platform if you want to check the latest songs. Saavn also joined in and introduced K-Pop music on its platform in 2017.
Gaana appears to be more inclined towards fans of Hindi music, particularly Bollywood tracks. It also has a big library for regional music. Similar to Saavn, Gaana also lets you stream music for free. There’s also a paid version of Gaana under which you can download songs.
You can try the trial version for 14 days by signing up on the app. As mentioned before, Gaana caters primarily to Hindi songs and there are many dedicated playlists, features depending on the genre, time it was released, and more.
Hungama is a feature-packed streaming app. The UI is quite interactive and filled with useful options for music streaming. On the ‘Now Playing’ section, you will find options for the full album, videos, and similar songs. This app also has shortcuts to directly tweet the song you’re listening to, and choose between gym and sleep modes.
You can also download songs at Rs 10 for a single download, and a packaged download of Rs 50 for 10 downloads. Hungama also merges songs saved in your phone on the app.
Wynk Music is Airtel’s music streaming app. Wynk Music comes with benefits for Airtel users as it offers unlimited download of songs and Hello Tunes subscription as well. For other users there’s Wynk Plus which offers unlimited downloads at Rs 120 per month.
You can stream music for free on Wynk Music even during poor or low connectivity, but in low quality. One backdrop of Wynk Music is that if you select a new song to play then it gets added to the queue instead of playing next.
Google Play Music
Google Play Music launched in 2011, but finally made its way to India in 2017. Google Play Music is a purely subscription-based app meaning you can’t even stream songs for free. You will need to register using Google account to start using Play Music. There’s a free one-month trial on Play Music which you can avail after entering your payment details for further subscription of Rs 99 per month.
Although the subscription will be automated once the period ends, you can end it anytime you want. Note that this subscription is only for streaming music. If you wish to download songs, you will have to purchase them. The cost comes to Rs 18 per song.
Apple Music is the pioneering paid music streaming app in India. Apple Music comes at a slightly higher subscription rate of Rs 120 per month than Google’s Play Music. There are family plans however which can be shared among five members. The only catch with Apple Music is that you require an Apple ID to create an account.
Apple Music’s subscription not only covers streaming but downloads as well. In addition to songs, Apple Music also gives access to exclusive podcasts, TV shows and films.
You can also stream music on Soundcloud but the application is more focused on crowd-sourced content. If you’re an artist, Soundcloud could be a great platform you to create your own channel and share it with your friends.
And then you can also stream music on YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing network. You can listen to music and podcasts on YouTube in the background using this trick. READ: How to play YouTube videos in background on your iPhone or Android smartphone
