iOS 11.3 Beta 2 rolls out with new Battery Health section: How it works
Apple’s new iOS 11.3 Beta update brings a new Battery Health section. Here’s how to enroll with Apple’s beta programme.Updated: Feb 07, 2018 19:04 IST
After drawing flak from users for deliberately slowing down old iPhones with worn out batteries, Apple on Tuesday rolled out the iOS 11.3 Beta 2 update that features a new section called Battery Health.
The beta version gives a sneak peak at how the new battery feature will work on the new and older iPhones. Note that the feature is still part of the beta version and it might go through more updates once the final version of iOS 11.3 is rolled out, which is scheduled sometime next month.
The Battery Health section lets you know if the worn out battery on your iPhone is causing the performance throttle, a controversial feature that forced Apple to roll out the update in the first place. Apple, however, says the feature “dynamically manages the maximum performance of some system components when needed to prevent a shutdown.”
Nonetheless, the new section allows users to disable performance management and make the iPhone to use optimum speed. If your iPhone is in good condition, the Battery Health will say your device has maximum capacity (100%).
“This is a measure of battery capacity relative to when it was new. Lower capacity may result in fewer hours of usage between charges,” adds the description.
Another notification that says “Peak Performance Capability” means your iPhone is delivering normal peak performance.
So, if the Battery Health says that Maximum Capacity has been lowered to say, 90%, you know Apple is throttling performance.
The insight will be corroborated with the secondary section that says, “This phone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. Performance management has been applied to prevent this from happening again.”
In case of iPhones with serious poor battery conditions, the message will say, “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorised Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity.”
If you don’t want Apple to apply “performance management”, simply click on the disable icon next to it.
