Huawei’s sub-brand Honor launched its 9N smartphone in India today. Honor 9N packs decent specifications along with a premium design in the budget smartphone category.

The smartphone is an upgraded version of Honor 9 Lite, the company’s best-selling smartphone in India. Keeping its price, specifications and features in mind, we’ve compared Honor 9N with tested performers in this category – Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

Design and display
In terms of design, Honor 9N stands out without a doubt. The smartphone features the trending notch cutout on its display with a thin bottom bezel. Accompanying it is a 2.5D glass design in two colour options of silver and blue.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 are more identical in design with the latter borrowing much from the former. Both phones lack the notch for a full-screen display but offer a ‘Full View’ display with 18:9 aspect ratio.

In terms of specifications, Honor 9N features a 5.84-inch full HD+ display. Redmi Note 5 and Zenfone Max Pro M1 both pack a 5.99-inch display with the same full HD+ resolution.

Processor, RAM and storage
Honor 9N differs from its competitors running an in-house Kirin 659 octa-core processor under its hood. Zenfone Max Pro M1 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 processor, while Redmi Note 5 comes with Snapdragon 625 SoC.

In terms of storage, Honor 9N offers two variants with 4GB of RAM and 64GB and 128GB as options. As for the other two, there are two variants of 3GB RAM plus 32GB, and 4GB RAM plus 64GB storage. Asus recently launched a new model of Zenfone Max Pro M1 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 also offers dual cameras with 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.

The dual cameras work together to achieve a DSLR-like bokeh effect on photos. The new upgraded Zenfone Max Pro M1 has 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual cameras, and a 16-megapixel selfie snapper.

For selfies, there’s an 8-megapixel front camera. Redmi Note 5 has a single 12-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture. Up front, the smartphone houses a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash.

On the software front, all three phones run custom ROMs based on Android OS. Honor 9N runs EMUI 8.0 with Android 8.0 Oreo layered on top. Redmi Note 5 runs the older Android 7.1 Nougat with MIUI 9. Zenfone Max Pro M1 offers a different experience with its stock Android 8.0 Oreo.
