‘Imagine what Trump can do’: Twitter users think 280 characters is a BAD idea
A higher character limit was inspired by how people use Twitter when writing in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, the company said.Updated: Sep 28, 2017 10:26 IST
The days of Twitter Inc limiting messages to 140 characters, a signature of the social network since its launch in 2006, may be numbered.
Twitter said on Tuesday that it would begin a test with a random sample of users allowing them to send tweets that are as long as 280 characters, double the existing cap, in most languages around the world.
Many Twitter users reacted to the news by lamenting the loss of brevity while some warned the micro-blogging website’s founder Jack Dorsey of how Donald Trump can do even more ‘damage’ with 280 characters.
Here are some of the funniest reactions:

280 characters is a Trump-ian dystopia for many
Twitter allowing #280characters? BAD! I've never had a thought or idea that takes more than 140 characters.— Donald J. Trump (@RealDonaldTrFan) September 27, 2017
.@realDonaldTrump has been wrecking America 140 characters at a time. Imagine what he could do with 280 now.— Vicente Fox Quesada (@VicenteFoxQue) September 27, 2017
And in one stroke, Twitter doubles the complexity of our nation's foreign policy.— Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome) September 27, 2017
I gotta admit, I did not think the 280-character limit would have this effect on Trump pic.twitter.com/niw4PRA31l— James Poniewozik (@poniewozik) September 27, 2017
The chosen ones took the test head on.
Oh shit I was selected as one of the special ones to tweet in 280 characters. HAHAHA suck it losers, I feel like God right now. Wait, I'm not done, I would also like to say that all these words I'm typing right now are useless and I wasted them just because I CAN. These too, lmao— Big Cat (@BarstoolBigCat) September 27, 2017
