Tech Wrap: OnePlus 7 launch date, TikTok ban, Thanos Easter egg and more

This week started with smartphone launches from Realme and Xiaomi which then trickled down to some soft announcements. Here’s everything that made headlines in tech this week.

This week in tech was majorly dominated by smartphones. Realme launched the ‘Pro’ version of its Realme 3 smartphone in India. OnePlus made its long awaited announcement of the launch date for its flagship OnePlus 7 series. There were two more smartphone launches from Xiaomi – Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7. Moving on, the ban on TikTok downloads in India was lifted, and the week ended on a sweet note with Google’s Easter egg for Marvel fans.

Here’s a breakdown of all things that made headlines in tech this week.

Realme 3 Pro launched in India

Realme 3 Pro launched at Rs 13,999 for the base model with 4GB+64GB, and Rs 16,999 for the 6GB+128GB model. The smartphone shares almost the same set of specifications with its rival, Redmi Note 7 Pro. It has a 6.3-inch full HD+ display, Snapdragon 710 processor, 4,045mAh battery with VOOC fast charging.

Realme 3 Pro has a dual-camera setup of 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. For selfies, it offers a 25-megapixel front camera.

OnePlus 7 launch date

After a series of leaks and rumours, OnePlus finally announced the launch date for its OnePlus 7 series. OnePlus 7 will launch on May 14 globally, and in India. The Chinese company will launch OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro and a 5G smartphone as well. So far, OnePlus has confirmed OnePlus 7 Pro will come with triple rear cameras and an upgraded display.

Redmi Y3, Redmi 7 launched in India

Xiaomi launched its third-generation selfie smartphone in India. Redmi Y3 comes with a 32-megapixel selfie camera with EIS, AI portrait mode and more. Xiaomi also made a surprise launch of Redmi 7, its new budget smartphone. Redmi Y3 and Redmi 7 offer the same set of specifications except for the selfie camera and storage configurations.

TikTok ban lifted

The viral video app, TikTok was facing a potential ban in India following reports of pornographic content on its platform. The Madras High Court asked the Centre to ban TikTok in India following which the app was removed from Apple and Google. However, in a major victory for ByteDance, the ban on TikTok downloads was lifted. The app is yet to arrive on Google Play Store and App Store.

Thanos Easter egg

Celebrating the release of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame this Friday, Google had a special surprise for all fans. Type Thanos on Google Search and tap on his Infinity Stone-studded gauntlet. Once you see Thanos’ fingers snap, the page will scroll down and search results will start disappearing.
