Andy Rubin started working at Google when the search giant bought Rubin’s two-year-old startup, Android Inc. Under Rubin’s leadership, Android went on to become the world’s most dominant mobile operating system. Now, a report from technology news website The Information, claims that the father of Android is about to start his own smartphone brand.
The report claims that Rubin has been trying to recruit people to help build a new phone company through Playgorund Fund, an incubator that Rubin started after he left Google in October 2014, which has since raised over $300 million.
The Android market is crowded at the low-end -- think OnePlus, Xiaomi, Micromax, and hundreds of other device-makers -- but at the higher-end, there is little competition to Apple’s iPhone from Android devices.
As the person responsible for the creation of Android, Rubin is perfectly poised to take on the iPhone.
“Andy Rubin has been trying to start an Android phone company that would take advantage of industry trends, which have made easier to produce and launch new brands in recent years,” says The Information report.
There are no further details on Rubin’s upcoming company, but watch this space for details.
