Novak Djokovic captured his fourth Wimbledon title with a 6-2 6-2 7-6(3) win over Kevin Anderson. Speaking to journalists after the match he talked about his son and how this victory was extra special to him – “I couldn’t pick a better place, to be honest, in the tennis world to peak and to make a comeback. Wimbledon has been always a very special tournament to me, and to many players obviously. I dreamed of winning it when I was a seven-year-old boy. I made a lot of improvised Wimbledon trophies from different materials. I really always dreamed of winning Wimbledon. When that happened back in 2011, when I became No. 1 of the world, in just a couple days all my dreams came true. It’s really hard to compare this year’s victory and trophy with any of the other three because they’re all special. But if I can pick one, that would be probably the first one and this year’s winning because my son was at the trophy ceremony, which made it extra special.”read more

Let’s start with the score: 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-7 (9) 6-4, 26-24. And the time: 6 hours 36 minutes. Tennis matches generally do not carry on quite like this - unless they involve John Isner. His ultramarathon loss to Kevin Anderson, by that score and over all those hours, in the Wimbledon semifinals on Friday amounted to the longest Grand Slam singles semifinal in tennis history. Anderson, a 32-year-old South African, reached the U.S. Open final last year and pulled off a quarterfinal upset Wednesday of top-seeded Roger Federer, which went to 13-11 in the fifth set. A “crazy” journey that began with Serena Williams taking baby steps back into top-flight tennis following a 13-month maternity break has come almost full circle at Wimbledon as the American stands just one win away from what would be a remarkable triumph. Should she beat Angelique Kerber to claim an eighth Wimbledon title on Saturday and draw level with Margaret Court’s record Grand Slam haul of 24, the commotion she will create will reverberate far beyond the sporting world - as she will have done it as a 36-year-old mother. Defending champion Roger Federer was knocked out of Wimbledon after South Africa’s Kevin Anderson roared back from two sets down to win a thrilling quarter-final clash on Wednesday. Anderson, who reached the U.S. Open final last year, saved a match point in the third set before recovering to beat the Swiss top seed 2-6 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4 13-11 after four hours and 14 minutes on Court One. The 32-year-old Anderson will next face American John Isner, who overcame Canada’s Milos Raonic 6-7(5) 7-6(7) 6-4 6-3 in the battle of two of the biggest servers in the men’s draw. Three time winner Novak Djokovic returned to a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time since the 2016 U.S. Open, beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-2. The Serb looked in impressive form, particularly when he closed out the final set in ruthless fashion to set up a blockbuster semi-final with world number one Rafa Nadal. (Video: SNTV). For 35 minutes on Centre Court Serena Williams was knocked off her stride by a feisty Italian who looked as though she had ripped a page from the American’s tennis manual. Playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final, unseeded Camila Giorgi went toe-to-toe with the seven-time champion and became the first player to take a set off her so far. Williams raised her intensity level, added some velocity to her groundstrokes and some decibels to her growls and powered back to win 3-6 6-3 6-4 -- a scoreline that was a touch closer than what actually transpired on court. Serena Williams was the lowest-ranked player ever to reach a Wimbledon quarter-final. Her ranking is 181. (Video: SNTV). (Hindustan Times)read more

Being scheduled to play last on Court One on ‘Manic Monday’ is something Novak Djokovic is getting rather used to - and also getting rather fed up with. A year after his 2017 fourth round match was postponed by 24 hours into what is a designated ‘rest day’ for the men, he narrowly avoided suffering the same fate again. In other highlights, German 11th seed Angelique Kerber became the highest-ranked player to reach the women’s quarter-finals after she outclassed Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic 6-3 7-6 (7-5) at Wimbledon on Monday.
