Pradeep Tamta of Congress and Ajay Tamta of the BJP have been pitted against each other in Almora Lok Sabha constituency since 2009 when Pradeep Tamta of the Congress won from the seat. Ajay Tamta won the seat in 2014, riding the Modi wave.

The two-term legislator Ajay Tamta is a minister of state in the Union cabinet. The BJP’s Almora candidate was also a member of the consultative committee of the ministry of water resources and river development and Ganga rejuvenation.
