Supreme Court dismisses petition seeking ban on Halal slaughter

The court was hearing a petition filed by an organisation, Akhand Bharat Morcha, challenging Section 28 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act which provides protection to various forms of killing of animals, including Halal.

The counsel for the BMC told the division bench of justices SC Dharmadhikari and Gautam Patel that the civic body had issued 850 permissions for slaughtering animals outside abattoirs and designated places for Bakri Eid.

The European Union’s top court ruled that animal slaughter without stunning can only occur in approved abattoirs, saying a ban on temporary slaughter houses does not violate Muslim religious freedom.
