Delhi police arrest Rakesh Goel, owner of Karol Bagh hotel Arpit Palace where 17 people died in a fire

Rakesh Goel, the owner of hotel Arpit Palace in Karol Bagh, was arrested by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch and will be produced in court today, DCP Rajesh Deo said.

Three staff members of Arpit Palace survived fire by jumping to adjacent terrace

According to employees of Hotel SPB, which is located right behind Hotel Arpit Palace, jumping to their terrace was easier as it was only 15 feet lower than Arpit Palace.

Arpit Palace’s emergency exit was mere formality, it remained locked every night

A day after the blaze left 17 people dead, a security guard of Hotel Arpit Palace and several employees of neighbouring hotels in Karol Bagh said that the narrow, green iron shutter was locked from outside every night.

An investigating officer said they had locked the shutter of the emergency exit of Hotel Arpit Palace after the fire to seal the premises. However, it remained locked from the outside most times before the tragedy.(HTPhoto)

Owner of Arpit Palace hotel where fire killed 17, is on the run: Cops

During initial probe, police found that the hotel was being run by someone else while the licence was issued in Goel’s name. He has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which is punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment, police said.
