London High Commission violence: NIA takes over case; Khanda, Gurcharan & Jasvir named suspects

The NIA has taken over investigations into the March 19 violence and dishonour of the Indian National Flag by Sikh extremists at the Indian High Commission in London. A case has been registered against the suspects under various sections of the IPC and UAPA. The incident has strained relations between India and the UK, with the Modi government seeking strict action against the suspects, including Avtar Singh aka Khanda, whose parents were part of the ISI-sponsored terrorist movement in Punjab.

According to inputs received from Delhi Police, the Home Ministry handed over the investigations to NIA on April 13 after the Special Cell registered a case on the incident on March 23 on the basis of a complaint filed by a London High Commission official present during the time of violence. Around two weeks after three undertrials escaped from the Amritsar central jail, the authorities have seized two iron roads from two inmates. This has, once again, raised a question mark on the security of the prison. On February 2, three undertrials had made a hole in a barrack wall using an iron rod and escaped the high-security jail by scaling its inner and outer walls.
